One of the Best finds

#1 Unread post by SensibleSal66 »

So, here we go. I found found this Metal Detecting on a short hunt. A place my friends and I hit a dozen times ( huge area) and with good luck, for them anyways. This hunt in 2002, It was my turn . I was hunting an area near a cellar hole that had alot of brush around it. While they were " Beating around the bush " (lol) , I figured those bushes weren't there 100 years plus .
So, On one bush I detected around it then pushed the branches down some and Bam, a nice solid 68 on my Whites XLT . I cautiously dug down and pulled up this nice " Greenie ". A 1870 IH penny . Boy, were they jealous (lol) .
So, what it worth in this condition . Ok, be easy on me, Thanks,Sal

It will grade out as 'Brown' for sure. I use PCGS Photograde, but remember, as Daniel says, this is NOT what it's worth - It's worth what someone will pay for it. There is quite a bit of good detail for a coin you found in the ground, especially on the reverse. You can just barely make out some of the lettering of Liberty in the headband. I'm guessing somewhere between VG08 and F12 based on the picture comparison, which means somewhere between $45 and $75 according to PCGS. I don't know how much they would take off for the loss of color; and if you've cleaned it, all bets are off. My two cents on your One Cent. LOLZ.

Yea, it seems the only IH's that really came out nice was the Bronze Indian Heads, and the 1890's .

Nice find! And good thinking about the bush as well.

It may just be the pic and lighting, but it looks cleaned and shows porosity from environmental damage. Nice details on the REV for a dug coin.
Common grading company shortcomings & resulting co$tly mi$take$ to collectors (using Kennedy No FG halves):
