Need help 1889-P Morgan

#1 Unread post by chuckmarks50 »

:D Good Day to All,
I am having a little problem with this one. At first I thought some where in the MS range; but I see what looks like wear in the hair over the ear. Now I am thinking AU55-58. What do you think? Is this wear from circulation or bag damage? The other high spots look good:?:

First off let me say you did a excellent job at photographing the coin. Second the morgan is a coin i feel i can come close to grading correctly. But after saying that i will say i am a amateur compared to the people on coin help. I cant wait to see what everyone else grades this coin. So i can see how close, or off i am.... In my opinion the morgan would grade at MS63 or MS64. It does have bag marks on the cheek. Were you think it may be worn , i dont think it is, thats how the hair is suppose to look like....Im proud you posted this, this will be interesting to see what everyone else thinks it grades at....

It's very difficult to grade this coin under this lighting condition. I do know the coin is AU58, at the least, but any grade given might have be net because I see what appears to be scratches on the reverse, right side of the eagle. Did you look closely at this area?

I saw the scratches under 3x and took a good look under 5x. Looks like scratches from a staple or paper clip.
thanks for your help.

Daniel i should have specified that i graded the obverse, chuck seemed to be focusing on the hair, the reverse is very scratched, but the eagle's breast has no wear. I bet you thought i should work for numismatic bureau if i graded the reverse MS63   Some members might not know that some photo's people post, you have to click on the picture. If they do they will see a good photo chuck took. Daniel believe me i have been listening to what you have preached in a lot of your post, DONT trust picture's when grading coin's.. Your right the lighting on chuck's photo can be deceiving. Daniel in your opinion do you think there is ware on the obverse were chuck has arrows pointed to. Just from the photo you see.

I don't percieve any wear on this coin, but I need to see a more natural color of the coin. The picture has great detail, but it leans toward the purple scale.

The violet spectrum of color. My camera has settings where I can make a coin appear yellow, red, blue, purple, orange according to the type of lighting I'm using.

Thanks for the input. I don't know much about taking photos. I am working on that this week end. I am trying to set up better lighting and a little photo booth.

James421 I think you are on the right trail the Morgan Silver Dollar Red Book 3rd. Edition has MS-63 as follows: Contact marks May have distracting marks in prime focal areas.Hairlines may have a few scattered or small patch Luster may be original or slightly impaired.Eye appeal Rather attractive.Darn shame it's not one of the CC mint marks.

ms-64 or 63 is high. I joined NGC for around 100. bucks a year. You get 5 coins slabbed for free. It's a good deal. You can look up any coin made in USA, & see cost grade by grade. Could not do with it. Great deal.Call for info at !-800-642-2646. I would say au 58. LOL azporkey :patriot:
