In the spirit of spreading it out over time, I have a coin for the 1940s and one from 46 BC. The first is a Franklin with an RPM (FS-501) and the second is a guy named Julius Caesar when he was appointed counsel for the third time, 2 years before he declared himself emperor for life (and a month or so later was assassinated)

It's just the alloy. Like a 1943 "steel" cent.

While the fake coins are quite compelling and you could become an EBay millionaire overnight with such fine products, I like the struck through nickel. Somebody tried to hide my 1949-S under a 1949-D.

Well they didn't do a very good job of hiding it. Tell you what, I'll get a nice 1949-D with an unspoiled mint mark and we can swap. Yours just looks so messy!
