1864 L Indian Head Cent? Fat or pointed bust?

#1 Unread post by cemba99 »

Recently this 1864L Indian Head from a dealer that I have done business with before - always good advice from him in the past. While I know I cannot see the "L" in this coin grade, I took the dealer's word that this is a pointed bust coin (meaning that the coin would be considered an "L"). The more I look at it, the more I question whether this is a fat bust or a pointed - I took it back to the dealer and he looked at it for a while and still insisted it was a pointed bust coin. I am still not convinced - thoughts?

Disclaimer: I have no experience with this type.

I did a photoshop overlay of Paul's post and your coin. The pointed bust looks much more likely to be accurate.

No L on ribbon. Blunt.

Brightened the OP's coin pic and placed it next to an 1864 PCGS L on ribbon and a cropped pic of an 1864 normal strike PCGS. NUmbers included in the pics to verify them online at PCGS.

Paul, the pic you posted is for 1860 IHCs.

I know, I was just illustrating what a pointed bust looks like
