#1 Unread post by Demon »

So all silver proofs bare an s if it’s on a silver planchet it will weigh 6.3 gm if it’s not silver and it’s clad it will weigh in at 5.6 gm now I may have misunderstood the UTUBE video OR NOT and that is if the quarter weigh 5.7 gm then it’s 40% silver???? last question and if the quarter is struck on a different planchet then it must weigh what the planchet it was struck ON weights???? thank you GODSPEED

OK: weights - there are tolerances within the weights allowed at the mint. If a coin is .1 gram off (5.7 vs. 5.6 as you said) then I would think it safe to assume it is the 40%. The tolerances from the mint are likely somewhere online for the 40% and 90% quarters. Sorry it was not in my chart.

Planchets: If a quarter was, let's say, struck on a dime planchet, then it would weigh what a dime was. Or...like in 1970, some of the dime stock metal was accidentally fed into the quarter machine and so the quarters are as thin as dimes, but weigh more than a dime b/c they are larger diameter. However, these odd 1970 quarters do weigh quite a bit less than a normal quarter.

All of the details can be found online with a search engine as to tolerances for each planchet and the story of the 1970 quarters struck on dime stock.

Yes all of my understanding of the different weights came from Daniel’s Utube videos coin tracker and the us mint web site so I have a state quarter that weighs 5.7 grams does that mean it’s 40% silver and if that’s the case shouldn’t it have an S mint mark and not the P ????? Would this be an error and do I post it here or in varieties and errors forum thank you again GODSPEED
