I agree, check the date first for Key date etc. /if normal date try the Acetone bath . Make sure it's 100% NOT nail polish remover . Either that or VerdiCare .

It's a 1913 type 1. I paid$30. I'll give acetone a shot. What the worst that could happen.

Acetone cannot meddle with the metal of your medal/coin!

It is totally safe as long as, as Sal has said, its 100% pure acetone. Walmart - health and beauty dept. for 2.00 - sold as fingernail polish remover.

OK - always a monkey wrench...I have read a posting somewhere if you put a copper coin in acetone in full sunlight that it might get a pinkish-tint to it. Never tried it personally. But I also have never put a copper coin in acetone and then run outside to expose it to sunlight either. Nor do I plan to.

Sorry Sal, I disagree. I deliberately left a mercury dime in an acetone bath (sealed in a jar so the acetone would not totally evaporate) for over 1 month so I could tell people it is safe to do so.

The only precaution I haveI is to not let the acetone evaporate on the coins surface such as just adding some acetone to the top of the coin and letting it evaporate. What ever gunk the acetone is cleaning off of the coin needs the benefit of being in an acetone bathTo disperse off of the coin surface into the solution. Just applying a small mount the surface of coinAnd allowing it to evaporateSometimes can make the dirt (I guess it chemically changes) much harder to remove.

Having use acetone on many hundreds of coins over the last 11 years, and not having experienced any adverse effects Using the techniques I recommend, makes me pretty confident the techniques work.

Update: Here are pics of how it turned out. Very happy with the results. Total soak time was about 12 hours.

Very nice looking Buffalo! Man I wish modern pocket change coins were as classy looking as the old designs!
Can you imagine what it must have been like to get a bank roll of these beauties fresh from the mint?!

Nice one 👍🏻

Thank you and I totally agree about classic coins. I normally only collect silver coins but I saw this and had to have it. Probably my favorite coin design.

Agreed - definitely one of the best designs IMO as well.

I cannot imagine what it would have felt like to be used to Mercury dimes and see the first FDR dime. No comparison. Let down for sure in my book.

Using Buffalos and seeing Jefferson nickels...oh well...

But being used to (a very "busy") amazing Walker OBV with amazing eagle REV and then seeing open fields Ben and the Liberty Bell?

I think I would feel as if things were being cheapened somehow.

And although I still like my Bens, how cool would it have been to have Walkers continue? At least we Walkers nowadays (minus the great eagle REV 😕) on ASEs.

This coin has a "Label" that states "Uncirculated Details - Cleaned", there is absolutely no whisper hairlines anywhere.

Finding undervalued coins from incorrect labels by "the experts" can be very enjoyable.
