Green patina on Indian Head and Lincolns

#1 Unread post by coinsPR3 »

I have numerous coins nearly identical to the image. Purchased from an old time treasure hunter that dug them up over many years. Some are certainly worth grading/slabbing from a details standpoint. No idea what PCGS or NGC will say about the color. Anyone have experience with green? Thanks! PS what grade would you give this one?

Welcome, PR3 - you've come to the right place!

That's a beautiful coin - details-wise. From my limited experience, you'll likely get a Questionable Color designation from the grading services. Those with much more knowledge and experience will give you more constructive feedback...

Green is not good usually means some type of micro pitting.

If you can find some, a product called Verdi-Care might be able to get help this. Verdi-Care cannot harm the coin and is "grading company safe" to use.

I carefully took some of the green off with weak vinegar and a q-tip. Daniel was right - nothing but micro pitting on entire surface. This coin sat underground for many many years. Pretty amazing that the green was almost perfectly satin and smooth on the surface over all the pits underneath.

I have several just like it . I also have 2 cent pieces. I think it gives the coin Character. After all, there "dug" coins .

It's a nice coin though. I have a lot of experience with copper problem coins.

I have some of the same Indian heads but they have a little bit of green almost like a stripe of toning lol amazing details though! So what would the grading company do to the coin you showed?
