#1 Unread post by CRW82 »

I was coin roll hunting and I came across this 19 72/2 dollar that seems like half was done in clad in half with struck and silver??? I did the tissue test half of it looks silver half of it looks clear I did the drop test and I hear that ping sound that silver gives off but I also hear the clad sound sometimes on the other half I’ve done the finger test I hear the nice ping. I’m baffled by this point if I post pictures can somebody please help me?

Your coin did not come from the mint this way. The way coin blanks are made it would be impossible for a coin to come out half silver.

Looks and sound can be deceiving. People also plate coins. Partially plated coins also occur b/c the plating wears off and/or it was a bad plating job to start with.

You have just a damaged 50¢ piece.

I agree

I was going to make a comment on the "Pinging" of coins....... But I did not,
...... as I don't think it's a good idea to bash your coins together!

Never be sorry for a learning experience! 😊
We are here to help people find the correct answers.

There are numerous ways. At present the Chinese have flooded the market with all sorts of fake silver coins from Morgan dollars to silver bars. Some shops use a magnetic slide b/c real silver coins are not magnetic at all and slide down quickly vs fakes. And XRF machine is the very expensive way to go. Surface testing with chemicals is not enough b/c some are plated. Do some internet searching for more answers.
