1887 Shield Nickel

#1 Unread post by captnickm »

I'm new here. My son and I are just getting into coin collecting.

We found this coin and are baffled.

I am hoping this community can shed some light on what it is. I know they stopped making shield nickels in 1883.

May I ask "Where" did you find this coin?

It's an 1867 not "1887" the corrosion on the coin is fooling your eyes. The 8 and 6 do not look the same.

I will take some better photos of it tomorrow and see if I can get a more clear picture. I really think it says 1887.

The bottom opening of what you think is an "8" has a larger opening than the 8, then you have a contact mark making it look like it curves like an 8, add the cleaning and corrosion and your eyes are being fooled. None were struck for 1887 and it is impossible, add that and you know it's a 1867. I've seen to many damaged coins and trust me, this is an 1867 all day long. Only a fake and worthless coin would be minted in the year it was not actually minted.

I agree with Daniel here...
I just want to know if you were "Scammed" by your so-called "Local Dealer".
