Morgan Surface Help

#1 Unread post by Jsul77798 »

Die abrasion or cleaning hairlines?
Lines go uo to or under devices.....
Cannot detect any "lines" on bust or surface of other devisces, only feild areas....

I recieved this Morgan today and am not 100% sure what state the surface actually is in. I dont have much experience with PL or DMPL pieces but have read that their surfaces will have different characteristics from standard strikes. To me, this coin looks to be at least PL obv but Im not sure on the rev. Whats got me is the obv. There are lines im not sure if are cleaning scratches or some die abrasion. They mostly go in 1 direction but what has me is theres no "halo" or space coming up to the devices. Many also appear to go right under or through them as if they were on the die. Also, the obv does not cartwheel as Im farmiliar with. The rev will but not the obv.....
Look at U of Unum....lines going "under it", other areas
So is this cleaning damage? Or die abrasion?
Thanks!!!!!

As long as the lines are raised then this is die lines from when the die face was resurfaced and why the coin has semi-PL look to it. So doesn't look cleaned to me.

Cool....Ive been reading all I can find online about these but the Basining sounded to me more like a procedure done in a different manner than one that would leave lines...I thought I had heard someplace that PL and DMPL dont cartwheel like normal strikes....Couldnt find that either....Is that true?

I am not use basining was used on dies that were already in use, so need to do some research. I thought that happened before and then after they used other methods to remove clash marks and such.
