I need guidance and advice from the experienced dealers in the community

#1 Unread post by jvineyard »

Hi everyone,

My name is Jared and I just took the coin collecting hobby up since I was a young kid. I love the hobby and glad I am back. I found out as a side note that I have a small affinity for buying and selling coins. I have owned two different collecting hobby businesses in my lifetime and have lot of experience with ebay and buying large collections of stuff. Plus I am an avid reader and viewer of Daniel.

Here is my dilemma. I recently put an add up on CL to buy Wheat cents and have gotten and huge response. 98% have been one of or people with junk drawer pennies but I have come into co tact with someone with a medium sized collection. He has plenty of bulk and au rolls from the 50s. He also has all of the key and semi key dates except 31s and 1909 svdb. Most of the key and semi key he has multiple copies of. Pictures he sent show what is probably Au 40 to 50 or maybe MS 73 1909 vdbs and multiples.

Also of note there are several proof and mint sets unopened from the 50s.

I have the bank roll to buy most or all of it but my problem is I am not as experienced at spot grading or pricing for collections when it comes to coins. In my other businesses I have tons of experience with grading and grading company standards bit I am kind of worried about pricing myself out.

So long post short what is your advice? What are your rules of thumbs for pricing bulk by grade and date etc. Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance for reading my post.

Jared

You need to look at these coins in person or images of each coin then do an ebay sold item search and price an offer accordingly. If they have all this they might want all the money anyway so might be a waste of time. My suggestion is to ask him for his worse and best semi-key and see what he wants for each. If he's not for sale price to resell then pass.
