1790 Anti-Slavery Medallion

#1 Unread post by mhonzell »

My most recent acquisition is a bit controversial, so I ask that you view it in the sense it was made: An advertisement by those attempting to abolish slavery in Britain. The groups fighting for the end of slavery accomplished their mission in 1807 after many years.

This medallion does not express the torture and pain that the slaves endured, but the idea of a humble man attempting to say what was being done, is wrong.

Wedgewood's movement began in 1787 with a drawing of the man in chains. It became the symbol for the abolitionist; appearing on plates, newspapers, and medals. They were worn for others to see.

There were also sketches of slaves bearing arms to fight their way to freedom. It was rough time that came to a conclusion. Yet, it took America another 55 years to reach Emancipation.

Those medallions were a powerful form of communication.
