1975 Roosevelt Dime possible flip/rotation/double strike

#1 Unread post by Slim »

I thought this was just a damaged coin until I spotted the raised dot btw the L and I in liberty. At the correct orientation one can see the sides of the dot, so it’s definitely been stamped. What can you all make of it? Thanks

Your coin is damaged from extreme heat, it's not a mint error. I recommend going to error-ref.com and looking up the terms you used in your title here.

I appreciate the coverage here. I happen to live next to a metallurgist who questions the high heat hypothesis. They question why the dot exist. Did it just form out of nowhere? Did the pressure of the strike create heat and bubbles? Is there a website that describes high heat deformations? Was this dime exposed to high temps ex post facto? Not sure where to go from here. The guidance is dismissive.

I can say from many times finding coins looking like yours in a large ash pit where My grandfather used to burn a lot of trash (many years ago) from his laundromats, that heat does indeed have this effect on clad coins. I found many over the years. One dime I specifically remember was like a bubble. Other times there were just "bubbles" on the surface and/or could be seen on both sides.

use a search engine for this:
"extreme heat damaged coin" there are a lot of places online talking about these.

The striking of the coin cannot make this raised area happen from heat. Each coin is struck with at least 20 tons of pressure leaving only the areas that are forced into the die's void areas raised on the final coin surface.

As to how the bubbles for, you may or may not find online any specifics. Over the years I do remember reading where it was thought imperfections in the original alloy of the copper layer may have vaporized and expanded with enough force to move the (now more plastic form the heat) layer of metal outward away from the center.

Yet one more possibility is to look online for shrinking coins with electricity. Sometimes when zapped with very high power capacitors, a coin can come out looking like a bubble as well (but most, in the setups they use, just compact in diameter).
