1. Post a front and back image of your coin with a specific question about what you’re seeing or asking about and one coin per topic.
2. Please remove coin from the holder unless it’s US or an official mint case or unless it is graded by a grading service.
3. Images should be taken by a camera or cell phone camera, we ask that members don’t use images through a microscope screen.
4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.
5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.
6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. US Type Set High Grade Coins or Key Dates.
I’m starting on a US type set starting in 1800’s. So the question is, Is it best to get the highest grade of the coin I can get or get a key date from the series. IE: Very Common wheat MS 68 or a VF 1931-S. Thank you for all the input.

It really comes down to a personal choice. If you want a really good-looking type set, go for the high-grade coins. If you want a type set of rarities, go for option 2. Personally, I would go for high-grade coins in a type set. They represent the coin better than a key date would.

It is all a personal choice - there is no right or wrong with how YOU want to collect YOUR coins . If you cannot decide, then you can always switch to the other system if you find out you are not enjoying the one you choose.

Re: US Type Set High Grade Coins or Key Dates.
I would say that you are starting out your set wrong already...If you are going to start in the 1800's, use an 1800's example to make a determination: Common Morgan MS69 $150,000 or XF 89 CC, 93 S, or 95 Proof....Unless money is not a factor, I think the choice is clear!
Re: US Type Set High Grade Coins or Key Dates.
Like others have said; it's all personal preference or what you can afford. For me, key dates and highest grades for a type set?? ............out of the question!!
I save the key dates and highest grades for my individual albums. My priority for my Dansco 7070 (no gold) was a "consistent (eye appeal) looking", problem free set. I tried my best not to have a MS-68 coin sitting next to a G-4 coin in the set. I would intentionally buy "some" coins at lesser grades, because I liked the eye appeal and it had a consistent look with the rest of the album.
For years, I thought a Type Set was out of reach for me. Surprisingly, I actually had 1/2 to 3/4 of the coins in my collection. It was a very slow, 5 to 10 year process for me to complete the set. I had to stay focused with this set. It's to easy to get sidetracked with this coin stuff.
Good luck with the set. Keep us posted on your progress.
