I'll add my most valuable find from circulation.I won't tell you which variety it is, but it broke a record at auction in 2011 when it sold for $2900...not especially pretty, but it was a beautiful thing when I first saw it lol:

Re: 1986 D Lincoln Date Error: Backwards "L"986 D: Any Hel
Probably a linear plating blister. An accident such as a backwards L cannot happen in the die making process because the design is transferred from the master die (without going into detail). The only backwards misplaced letter would be from a dropped letter, but that would be incuse, not raised.

Since MM were added to the die by hand until 1990, this is actually considered within tolerance. I've seen this one and a 1987 that is just as bad.

Re: 1972 Lincoln Cent DDO-012
This doesn't appear to be from the master die doubling, although I believe there was at least one doubled die created from the doubled master. There were two master dies in 1972 so you will see about half of them that look like this picture. My favorite and easiest PUP is the humped B in LIBERTY. Nic...

Re: Two Of The Most Common Error Coin Mistakes
For modern coinage,it's a little more complicated than that Daniel. The Master Hub creates a few Master Dies, which in turn create many Working Hubs, which are then used to create lots of Working Dies. I only point it out so that people understand where the term Hub Doubling comes from.

Keep in mind that the doubling is on the die from the time it is produced...it doesn't get that way over time although the die may change slightly with wear

There is so much deterioration on the die that it would be difficult to determine anything with certainty. But, if you feel confident it is an RPM...send it to an attributer, fees are typically $3-4 per coin plus shipping.

Re: 1959 " Black Beauty" Nickel
There are a couple of different theories as to what caused the black coloration. One is that the annealing process was done incorrectly and the other is that there was too much silicon in the alloy mixture. Also there are other years with black beauties...one year I recall being 1958, but 1959 is th...

Re: Die Crack ? Question about Date
Yes, it appears to be a die crack. As for the letters,my theory is that it is caused by a slightly grease filled die because I have noticed it frequently on grease filled die examples where the lettering was still intact.

The mint generally doesn't know how many of a particular error are minted since they were released by mistake. The prices you mention above are not bad, but I would stay away from unslabbed examples in general.

Re: Die Cracks VS. RPM
I'll have to disagree on one point Daniel. Die cracks are errors, not varieties. But agree that a progressive run is probably the most sought after, especially if it is pre-cud (rim to rim). Also progressive chips are sometimes a good collector item. Filled mms are usually the result of a broken mm pun...

Re: Die Cracks VS. RPM
That is a big list of questions but I'll answer a few. First, the CPG lists varieties, not errors. Varieties are repeated because they are on the die and stay the same thru the life of the die. Errors can vary and are not always part of the die so they cannot be cataloged or priced as easily as a var...

Incuse would be "sunken" as opposed to "raised".
Yes the coin is real,it just appears to be opposite of what it should. But that happens sometimes with pictures. I'm also told he has been posting this coin for several years like this as an attention grabber.
