You should use this method for every coin you find that you think is a doubled die or an RPM. If you do not find yours there, then your coin is not the error you are asking about. It is likely damage or some form of non-collectable doubling such as machine doubling.

In the following example, we are looking to see if our 1977-D cent is a doubled die. This method works for any modern US coin.

First go to varietyvista.com and scroll down
    Variety Vista Home1-2.jpg

You will now see the following - select which coin you are looking up and the proper range for the date In this case a 1977-D cent):
    Variety Vista Home3.jpg

You will see the following now. Choose the DDO button to show ALL DDOs for Lincoln cents.
    Variety Vista Home4.jpg

You will see the following. Scroll down to find the proper date and mint mark (1977-D):
    Variety Vista Home5.jpg

When you scroll you will see 1977-D - click there
    Variety Vista Home6.jpg

There is only ONE known DDO for 1977-D b/c, as you can see, only DDO-001 is listed there. If there were more than one for this date, they would also be on that page.
    Variety Vista Home7.jpg
Click on the DDO-001 to see all pictures for this DDO

Scroll to see more pictures of the DDO-001. Yours much match ALL the pictures to be the DDO-001.
    Variety Vista Home8.jpg

If yours does not match all the pictures, then yours is not the DDO. If you think you see doubling anyway, then you probably have a coin with machine doubling on it or some other kind of non-collectable doubling

It is this simple for all of the coins you want to check.
Please do this with ALL of your coins before you post them and ask if they are a doubled die or an RPM.

If the coin's date and mint mark has many doubled dies listed, such as DDO-001, DDO-002, DDO-003 etc. The check DDO-002 to see if yours matches all the DDO-002 pictures. If not, then try DDO-003, etc.

    Easy coin photo setup.
Note - the pictured ring light is OPTIONAL, but works well - use any good light source

Spend the very few seconds it will take to read the print in the picture or you will still get fuzzy pictures.

    How_to_Take_Coin_Pics_Setup_Result.jpg

NOTE: A stack of dimes works well in place of the bottle cap for smaller coins like pennies. Whatever you elevate your coin with must be totally hidden from the camera's view and make it look like the coin is floating by itself above the table. Only then will the camera be forced to focus on nothing but the coin.

You can see the coin on the screen of the camera in the following setup. That very picture of the REV is included below:

The picture seen on the camera in the photo (cropped after taken):
    1920-D_WALKER_REV.PNG

    And the OBV:
    1920-D_WALKER_OBV.png

Lighting note: [/u] A layer of tissue (or multiple layers) in front of a light source (like a lamp, LEDs etc.) will diffuse light and eliminate glare. Use trial and error with your specific setup until you get what you want.

Our member Paul says he uses a cut out piece of milk jug to diffuse light. I have not tried it with my ring light, but am thinking if the light needs diffusion, the milk jug circle would alleviate having to cut out rings of tissue every time someone wanted to take pics of coins.

When you're posting in this forum remember these things:
Start your own topic, so please don't post your coin or question in another person's topic.
Remove your coin from the holder.
Post ONLY one coin per topic, we don't need comparison images.
Crop your image and take as clear of an image as possible.
Don't post camera pictures of microscope screens - these are pixellated and hide details when zoomed in * SEE BELOW to find out how (after video link).
You need to post post ( 1 ) a full OBV picture, ( 2 ) a full REV picture, ( 3 ) and picture(s) of the area on your coin you are asking about).
Also be descriptive in your title AND question about your coin. Include date, mint, coin type, denomination and the specific characteristic on the coin that prompted you to ask your question.
Lastly, please watch the video below! [/size]

The video shows how to attach only 1 photo. Use the same method but select
all 3 of your photos when posting a question.

    * Connect microscope to your computer and use a screenshot, or your microscope should have a memory card slot to save/transfer to your computer to then take a screenshot.
