Circulation find!

"They don't make 'em anymore!' Those words created a monster back in 1971, when I was 7 or 8 years old. I was showing a pal the back of a penny that had wheat stalks, instead of some building. In fact, at the time, about half of the cents in circulation did. I remember finding Lincolns all the ...

I'd like a turn at the 1974-* Lincoln cent game, please

One of the "free 9" coins extracted from a box, when I discovered that one of the cents in the roll was a rare "Roosevelt dime struck on a dime planchet" error! 1974-blob. I was happy just to have an "S" mint for a change. After reading the other posts here, I'm curious...

Very weird 1927-O Mercury Dime (lge mm variety)

So, my great grandma collected coins from circulation. Among the coins passed on to me was a mercury dime folder, about 85% complete! Yay! You need to understand at this point that I come from a long line of craftsmen, woodworkers mostly. We're also talking about an era where nothing was ever wasted...

Re: What error is this called and what would an estimated value be ?

Quit saying everything is pmd. This is a mint error. Its an indentation .. something circular got stuck on the DIE when it struck the coin ,causing a circular indentation on the face of President Kennedys face. If you don't like the advice here then post your coin somewhere else for a second opinio...

eBay LOTS, 1854 large cent

I won 3 auctions from this one guy on eBay. A 4-coin lot, a 3-coin lot, and a single coin. (1847 EF - nice!) The poster's pics were 500 x 375 pixels. (Maybe he took them in the 1970s?) s-l500.jpg When they arrived, 5 of them were utter disasters [/u]! Like this one: S2060008.JPG When I contacted him...

1853 dime - to arrow, or not to arrow. That is the question

What stealth trickery is afoot here!

Did they scrape the arrows off this dime to make it more valuable? What cunning counterfeit! Undetectable!

I am perfectly fooled.

Safe Coin Storage...aka. No, Virginia, slabs are not airtight

I do not believe there is any claim by any grading company that their slabs are airtight. That idea is, like so many other things, an assumption made by the masses. When stored, coins degrade primarily from both exposure to air and humidity. The chemicals in the air oxidize (yup ...just like a nail ...

Re: Coin Washing

Remember "shiny" is NOT what makes a coin "valuable" to a collector. Collectors are looking for coins that have no wear on the design. Of the coin still has original luster, then this is a plus for sure. But a worn coin that has been shined is a sure sign of cleaning and greatly ...

1876-S Seated Quarter - The Butler Did It

Back at the turn of the former century, affluent collectors housed their coins in wooden cabinets, usually obverse up. They would periodically "groom" them by wiping the dust off with a cloth. If they were really well off, they would delegate this task to their household staff. I believe t...

You should use this method for every coin you find that you think is a doubled die or an RPM. If you do not find yours there, then your coin is not the error you are asking about. Will do! Here are a few examples of encapsulated dies from NGC (not mine). It’s not really worth it to get any of the fully defaced dies certified as they aren’t really worth much to begin with. But dies that have some, or all of the face remaining does make it worth it. Cheers! 61E79E2C-226A-4F78-A...
