Full Steps or not?

I have recently found Daniel's daily videos and enjoy them - especially fond of the artificial intelligence / machine learning grading app he has been talking about recently. I've been a longtime NGC member (largely for ancient coins), but recently joined PCGS and sent in 10 coins for grading. 5 of ...

Couple of cents from PCGS

I sent a half cent and an Indian cent in my most recent PCGS grading shipment. Wondering if I got lucky and unlucky on them? For this half cent, it came back as AU Details - 98 Damage. I'm not sure I can pick out which mark is considered damage on this. 57.jpg For this Indian Cent, it is a pretty ra...

Re: Question about Selling coins

Selling on ebay comes with a 15% fee (ebay + paypal) - so if possible, I'd recommend selling (safely) local - perhaps craigslist - if the coins aren't TOO rare. If you are targeting silver coins (which are hot right now), you should be able to sell quickly with no fees - perhaps even higher than spo...

Coin Photography - suggestions?

I'm bored during COVID, so starting to work on coin photography for record keeping, but also in case I sell things. Finally got this one showing details as well as I could. Does anything look odd? Suggestions for improvement? Thanks, Scott P.S. I always find it interesting when even in this conditio...

Thanks guys. Filled out the PCGS Restoration form. Going through other PCGS slabs to see if I have others to send in too. :)

Re: It all started when I found a proof nickel

Mike, Welcome! My story started about 40 years ago when I was kicking through gravel at my great grandparents house in the mountains of Arkansas - and found a nickel too. Of course it was black - and after much scrubbing (please don't do this), found it to be an 1882 shield nickel that was AU+ when ...

Re: Blank quarter planchet

I wasn't sure either, so I went to ebay and typed in "blank quarter planchet" and clicked the "sold" field so we can see what they actually sold for (versus listed for). In that form, clad quarter planchets tend to sell for $3-10. If you sent it to PCGS to grade, it might sell fo...

Re: Does this look like a date over a date?

Nice close up of the photo. They can be hard to get a steady shot at that range. From the shot you provided, I see what you are looking at, and I would think the same thing at first. I was unfamiliar with any overdates on the 1921-D, so I looked in Cherrypickers Guide and went to NGC's variety plus ...

Re: 1920 Buffalo Nickel help

I don't see anything in these photos that would disqualify a number grade - but *DISCLAIMER* you really have to hold a coin to have a reasonable assurance. I've had coins returned with all sorts of unusual notes - roller marks, color concerns, etc... Just because I don't see any hairlines from clean...

Not that they compare to yours, but here are a few recent quadrigas I had on my desk ranging from 137 to 46 BC.

1) Cn Domitius Ahenobarbus
2) Marcus Baebius
3) T Carisius

Re: 2004 D Wisconsin Coller Error ? I give up

I've never seen a coin shop that required a fee for questions / simple appraisals. If you want someone to look through dozens/hundreds/thousands of coins to document for insurance - sure... Anyway, my red flags are popping up all over - don't think I'd be going to that guy.

Re: 1787 Fugio - need advice on PVC damage

If that wasn't a 4-digit coin (pricewise), I'd recommend a soak in acetone or a stronger solvent. I have used NGC's restoration before on valuable coins - they got some serious PVC gunk / clouding off of coins. Never tried PCGS's (but I soon will be for growth that occurred inside a slab). Daniel ha...

Re: 1787 Fugio - need advice on PVC damage

It looks like, once the conservation is done, the coin is automatically sent for slabbing? I'm not sure I want to do that...I'll contact them to see if there are options. I have 12 colonial coins with this PVC issue...I'll have to try to ascertain their current value (I see that a lot has changed i...

First shot at axial lighting

I've been reading about axial lighting and thought I'd make a proof-of-concept rig. I recently bought a 1955 mint set and some of the coins had delightful toning - this penny was one of them. I really like how the penny came out, much better than direct lighting, but sure hope that this side of the ...
