Strange 194x-D 1c (mint error?)

I got this on an online auction last year. It appears to be a typical post-mint alteration on the obverse, EXCEPT for two interesting thing 1) There is absolutely NO trace of the old coin features in the flattened areas (even a penny smashed on a train track will still show its features) and the pat...

Re: Which would you rather have ? and.....

Both are impressive coins. One is literally a "pretty penny", but if tomorrow a spot of oxidation appeared on it's surface, its value would collapse faster than the Hindenburg. The 1795 makes me think of the history it has endured, which is really why I collect coins. It's value is on more...

Re: Irish Coins

These are just base metal tokens, and are not rare or official mint issue of any government. I remember similar "Irish Dollars" being handed out on St. Patrick's day. No great value, but fun for some people to collect.

Re: Is this rear serial number?

It's interesting, but probably not worth much beyond a dollar. You'll have to do some research. Maybe try ebay and look at "mixed ladder" serial numbers on Federal Reserve notes.

Re: Help Identifying Double Die

Hi Betty and welcome! You should have only one coin per post, but a quick answer is there is no doubling on these coins. There are books and websites than can help you better understand what a true "doubled die" coin looks like, and will save you a lot of guessing. Daniel may even have a y...

Re: GTG 1856 Large Cent headed into NGC for grading

That's a nice coin. But to me the toning looks a little suspect- maybe an old cleaning? But I am no expert on that and will wait to see what others say. Those old large cents are a favorite of mine.

Re: Couple of cents from PCGS

Wow that surprises me too that the half cent was deemed damaged. Was it just that rim ding and/or bit of damage around the bottom of the reverse? Either way congrats as they are nice coins.

Re: Commemorative us war ship launching mount with peace coin

A quick google of the USS Goodhue shows it was named for a county in Minnesota. The names engraved on the plates may be people who donated $$ to it's construction and "Charles" apparently pulled the switch to launch it. It's a genuine historical artifact of WWII, and there are many people ...

Re: HELP! FOREIGN COIN I CANNOT FIND INFO ON

Could it be a fancy old coat check token? Could the horseshoe mean a casino or racetrack connection?

Re: What is this?

I think some frontier saloon or gambling joint wanted to create a token, but to save cost simply pressed copper planchets between two quarters, and stamped a value on it, maybe as a poker chip. That's my wild guess, and I'll anxiously await the real answer. It's an interesting piece.

Re: 50 Years Today

If you don't mind my asking, what makes December 17th the specific start date? Did you get a coin as a gift?
