1913 Fake Liberty V Nickel
The above image is a fake 1913 Liberty V Nickel. It’s an altered 1910 Liberty V Nickel made to look like a 1913 Fake Liberty V Nickel. The creator actually pushed and carefully molded the 0 so it looks like a three even with the “bulb” serifs. I had to use a little magnification to see how this was accomplished.
Here’s the date under magnification and it’s obvious the metal has been pushed and molded, and glue was even used to fill the hole in this “carving”. It looks a bit crude under magnification but this is actually a decent job that took a bit of time to complete (. It could almost be called, to coin a new phrase, a “Hoboed 1913 V Nickel” since the zero has been carved into a 3.
However, an authentic 1913 Liberty Nickel would not be worn since they never entered circulation and there’s only five known to exist. All of them have a value of well over 3,000,000 dollars with two are proofs and the other three our normal or business strikes.
Here’s an image of a authentic 1913 Liberty V Nickel that sold for $3,172,500.00. Image courtesy of Heritage Coin Auctions
