Early American And Related Tokens
Rhode Island Ship Medals
On the obverse of the Rhode Island Ship Medal is British Admiral Lord Richard Howe's naval flagship, and the reverse depicts the retreat of American Forces from Rhode Island in 1778. The inscription is in Dutch and it's believed the medal was struck circa 1779 or 1780 as a propaganda piece to convince the Dutch not to sign the Treaty of Armed Neutrality. Specimens were struck in brass, copper, and pewter with no intentions of denominations for coinage.
