Look out! I see over 200 hundred auctions for the Thomas Jefferson Presidential Dollars, and some are claiming they have errors. Buyers need to be careful buying these supposed errors and unsearched rolls.
I want to tell fellow ebayers that you can go to your local banks and ask for rolls of Thomas Jefferson Dollars. It will cost you a flat $25.00 with no shipping charge. You will see these rolls on ebay for $25.00 and up, but look at the shipping charge. Also, the rolls from the bank will be unsearched.
I see many errors claiming they are the first on ebay, and most likely they will be one of many before the years out. I viewed errors such as, racoon eyes, extra edge letters, die cracks, dropped letters, cud mint mark, discolored, and etc.
Do some research before buying these coins! They may not be rare after all the hype settles down. Many of these supposed errors will be common, and many of these supposed errors are not errors at all, and can be made with heat, hammers (sledge hammers), chemicals and other devices.
It is a shame that some sellers will do just to make an extra buck, but some will do anything.
Furthermore, I wrote some other popular guides outlining some of the damaged or supposed error dollars like the Washington and Adams Dollar, and I encourage all to read them.
NOTE: Let me highlight a few things that I covered in my other guides on the Presidential mint errors and supposed errors. The Double Edge Lettering is a real error, however, this error can be duplicated with the right tools. In a previous guide I wrote on a Sacagewea Dollar that had edge lettering, and it was obviously fake, but looked like the lettering on a Presidential Dollar.
The "Dropped Edge Lettering" where the edge of the coin has a letter or number that shouldn't be there, can be caused by a coin falling into a mint, striking the obverse or reverse of another coin thus, punching a letter onto the edge of a coin.
The No Edge Lettering can be faked by using a tool like a Dremel to "sand" or "rub" off the edge lettering.
Other errors like cuds, die cracks, absence design features, filled design features, among others, usually don't add any extra value to any coin, let alone the Presidential Dollars. So, buyers need to be careful when looking to buy these supposed errors or common errors.
