Is the extra money for MS-64 over MS-63 worth it?

#1 Unread post by tab1962 »

I've noticed a big difference in MS-64 graded over MS-63 Graded Indian Head Cents. Is it worth it? My Official red book 2015 only goes to MS-63. Your thoughts welcome.

Thanks

Tom

It depends on who graded the coin and what dates you're talking about; PCGS graded coins trade for more than the others so sometimes it is worth knowing MS64 values. You can forget arguing with anyone on raw coins that could be MS64 or 63 since they should just be graded and certified.

The coins have been graded by PCGS for both the MS-63 and MS-64 just that is it really worth that extra? Is there a 'sweet' spot on the MS grades? Sort of like a car- brand new (Proof in coin) you pay a premium but if the car is only 2 or 3 years old you save 40% and almost get a new car. Maybe the MS-60 is the best deal in this mindset?

You can't compare coins to used cars, they don't depreciate like that. The higher the grade the higher the value and what you buy is going to depend on eye appeal and what you can afford; eye appeal is a huge factor and MS64 Red is worth the most, red/brown less and brown the least.

So with IHCs you have three conditions within the grade and I don't see cent value depreciating at all, most stay the same for years and some go up on a regular basis based on pop reports and demand and survival rates.

Now if you're talking about a new error or variety discovery of a modern coin or modern MS70 coins that first come out then you can wait until they drop in value. I can guarantee they will just like the No Edge Lettering Washington Presidential Dollars.
