Hi everyone, I think I found a rare 1930D penny
Hi all, my name is Tom, I work at a convenience store and every know and then "stumble" over some nice Coins.
This time I found this 1930D penny, it has the Lincoln obverse, but has no adverse side, has anyone ever heard or seen this type of coin ?
My Boss owns a Bank in this town and he also thinks it is a minting error.
I will post a picture as soon as I can.
Thank you

Well, i managed to take photos from front and back of this coin, the obverse seems to be slightly off to the right side , leaving a double "ring" on the left.
The adverse side does seem as if it had been filed down, the light exposes a LOT of scratch marks that can't be seen nor felt on the coin itself.
Thank you for all the help.
Tom

Now that I've seen this coin the I can safely say it's post mint damage and not a mint error. A coin is struck when two opposing dies sandwich the planchet and force the metal in the recesses of the die's design. So you can't get one side struck so well without striking the other side with the reverse side details.
Something has to hit both sides or neither side, but not just one side.

the coin should be much 'thinner' than a normal cent...

if you look on

you will also see some that have been sanded, but not finished yet......& sellers that do not know 'what these are', often sell them as 'errors'.

Re: Hi everyone, I think I found a rare 1930D penny

I believe this was an attempt to create a " Love Token " also. Loved ones, sometimes Soldiers going to War, would create these to give to their wife or girlfriend to remember them by . I've found and have seen several from the Civil War period . I suppose it didn't always have anything to do with going off to War also, but rather a sweat gesture of one's Love for another .
There are actually website out there that are dedicated to the " Love Token ". I seen some truly amazing designs, mostly in Silver Coins though .
Then there is what's called the " Hobo Nickel " in which we talked about awhile back and there are website's on this also, if anyone is interested .
