1977-D Kennedy half dollar DDO?
Hello everyone, this is my first post on here! I have a half dollar I found roll hunting that I cannot find any attribution for what I am seeing. I was originally thinking FS101 but it doesn’t have the correct die markers and my coin looks to have all the doubling in a counter-clockwise rotation, lower and to the right on “IN God” and higher to the left on “WE TRUST”. Is what I am seeing doubling? I don’t see flat shelves like machine doubling and I can see clear splits on the “IN G” as well as almost two complete “E” shapes on “WE”

Pictures are a bit grainy but I do see something going on, looks something like die deterioration but need better images and at different angles.
Re: 1977-D Kennedy half dollar DDO?
Thank you for looking at it Mr. Daniel. I will attempt to get better pictures and some from different angles as well tonight when I am home from work. I’m looking forward to seeing what you think as I am stumped.

did you check to make sure its not 40% silver---The only surefire way that you can readily test the coin though is to simply weigh it. A normal Kennedy half dollar is expected to have a weight of 11.34 grams while a 40% silver coins should have a weight of 11.50 grams.--good luck--
Re: 1977-D Kennedy half dollar DDO?
I think I remember seeing the copper core on the edge but I will double check just to be safe! I don’t think I have a scale sensitive enough to accurately weigh it though. I just check the edges when I am roll hunting and then the date also.

Got some more pictures but the quality is not great still. My microscope gets blurry at as close as I am trying to get so I couldn’t get very clear pics

I also got a pic of the “N” on another 77D I had And the one in question does look fatter to me. I tried using a tiny cut of paper for size comparison, it may not help at all.

I do not hugeeyes any "Die Doubling" in any of your images here....
Microscope images are very difficult to read when the object is to close to the lens, and has improper lighting for the image being taken

Thank you Paul. I am for sure still learning the microscope, only got it on Saturday and mainly because of this coin. What I think I am seeing is a pretty clear rotation on the letters, the clearest being the “N” and most of what I think I am seeing is a split on the top left area, two middle sections running parallel and then splitting again on the top right area. I tried to photograph it where the light was hitting the two sections and the split and was hoping these were detailed enough. When you see the pictures, especially the comparison between the other 77-d, what would you be looking for to indicate it was true doubling on the die?

If you are interested in "Die Doubling" I would recommend that you study and learn all the different forms of doubling.
If you search the Internet, you will find dozens of places that will give you images and descriptions.
:eureka:
Since there are several different forms of doubling, I would need to inspect your coin in hand to verify the variety.
If you are interested in me looking at it for you, contact me to the private messaging link in the upper right.
Thanks.
