penny weight question

#1 Unread post by Steven B »

I recently posted a 1999D penny that weighed 2.25 grams. On doing some searching it seems that the Canadian penny of that year weighed 2.25 grams. Coincidence? Would it even be possible?

Wold need a mint record to prove that could happen. Could be a light planchet which isn't that uncommon.

Yes, just the date and the weight of the planchet I think the Canadian ones weight more now. seems odd. How would the mint know if an employee tossed a Canadian planchet in the mix and, other than a mint record, would there even be a way tell if it was Canadian, Eh?

As far as I can remember up until 1908,the UK minted the coins for Canada. I do not recall the US ever making any coin for them at all. There is one case in which the San Francisco mint minted a 1970 Washington Quarter not on a blank planchet but over a 1941 Canadian Quarter. a Mike Byers had it up for sale on E-Bay in June 2016 and was asking $35,000 for this coin. Other then that I could not find any where in which any other coin/s were found. The US Mint does not know how this could of happened.

I believe the only way you could tell the difference would be by using a "Assay" test.

Yea assay or some metallurgical study. Same dia, weight, but slightly little more zinc and less copper than a US cent. If you would have waited just one more year, the Canadians went to steal, a simple magnet would have told the whole story, except maybe how a Canadian planchet got into the US mint system. lol.
