1976 D Washington quarter mint mark error
This mint mark Error is real I used a super piece of equipment to grab this image and a visible extra hollow D is 100% visible making this coin 1000% legit.

This damage from sliding contact with the coin that scraped the mint mark, so it's not a mint error.

A damaged coin is a mint error just like a chipped planchette machined error and or unpunched empty planchette same thing mechanical error. So your saying that's the way they wanted the D mint mark to look like ?.

A damaged coin is NOT a mint error, this coin is a post mint damaged coin so it was damaged after mint. The mint mark is a result of blunt force contact after it left the mint and has no additional value.

Re: 1976 D Washington quarter mint mark error
I understand the minting process very well. I have studied coin minting for a couple decades. I do all this for a living and have a large collection of damaged coins and counterfeit coins. You don't need documentation on something that doesn't happen during the minting process. Also something so minor as this does not add value to the coin. IF a coin has a minor error it has very little demand or interest. Your coin is not a mint error.
Study error-ref.com and look up all the sold errors from the past two decades on Heritage Coin Auctions. On neither site will you see tiny anomalies listed or sold. Only ebay with all the uneducated and unscrupulous sellers will you see damage on a coin being pawned off as an authentic error.

I agree with Daniel.
The "proof" is understanding what is possible from the US Mint. The "documentation" is found in books and sites like Error-ref.com.
Damage can look like anything. Errors produce specific results. If the "error" does not fit one of the known definitions of what is possible, then it is damage.

This is not the result of die wear or die deterioration doubling it is the result of blunt force contact that slid across the mint mark and scraped the coin. We see this often.
