Planchette error I think?

#1 Unread post by Bsherwo »

I’ve never been on a forum before so I hope I’m doing this right. I’ve seen several of your videos but I didn’t see anything like this penny I found. I was wondering if you could tell me if it had any value. Thanks for any information you can give me.
Thanks,
Bruce

This is a rim to rim die break and a piece of the die fell out and this particular error has a slang name, CUD, this describes what it looks like to people. When this piece of the die broke off the planchet metal filled it in and caused a weaker struck area on the opposing side.

Great find!!

Congrats on a great find.
If you can weigh it that will narrow down the date a little.

1983 had quite a few CUDS produced but if it weighs 3.1 grams it will be copper. (2.5 for the copper plated zinc)

I weighed the coin and it was 3 grams so that would make it a copper planchette, narrowing it down to 1980-1982.

Thanks for the weight.
And of course 1982 had small date, large date, copper and zinc at the Philly and Denver mints.

Scroll down to number 48. This seems similar and possibly a precursor to yours. Yours could be a later example than the one in the images, since yours is larger. Unfortunately the listing doesn't mention whether 48 is copper or zinc (it does appear copper though) The images seem to show an area towards the date that might be the beginnings of an additional die crack and larger area of the cud.

I just picked this up.
This might be an earlier die state version of yours?

... I don't have any "FULL COIN" images yet, my 'Big Scope' is down right now.

Neat.
I forgot to mention the cud in the link above was a small date also. CU-1c-1982-48(SD)
I wonder if yours has any markers that match CU-1c-1982-48(SD) in the link?
