1987 quarter look around the rim

What may have caused the issue with the rim to be crimped like this. It looks and feels similar to a bottle cap

When rims are intentionally flattened, that makes them curl inward, and the overall "dimension" will be smaller.

Thank you. I'll read about that term. It also explains why it feels harsh not smooth due to the tools used
