... This may be an oddball surface anomaly picked up by the light reflection into the lens,... That appears to be a "S" on the screen and in the images you have snapped... :mad:

try "spinning the coin" as you view it.
You may see this "S" appear and disappear as you rotate the coin.

It's die marks from the die being polished to remove contact marks. An actual S would be a dropped letter and struck into the coin and would have to be the same size and shape and an actual S on the coin die's design.
