1955 Wheat Penny with possible error?

#1 Unread post by John201691 »

A couple of weeks ago i found a few wheat pennies in a garbage bag from my grandparents house while salvaging belongings before the house was torn down by the looks of it i am assuming it was cleaned at one point because it stood out a lot compared to the rest but i noticed it was not as shiny and it was dull compared to other newer looking wheat pennies i have. I do not clean my pennies because somewhere i had read it was bad and could effect the value on most. I am not too sure but if you look at the 55 on the date it looks like it could possibly be doubled but i kind of think maybe its just the top layer separating from the base, until i get my microscope i cant really say for sure but its a nice find none the less and will be going into my collection. Let me know what you guys think!

The coin has been damaged and the date has some die deterioration but is not a doubled die. Cleaning coins can hurt their value but a 1955 Lincoln cent isn't that valuable unless it's is a doubled die.

Thank you for the reply Daniel, i remember a few years ago i was told not to ever clean my coins no matter how bad you may want to for the exact reason you stated. But by the looks of how dull/clean it looked my first thought was it had been cleaned somehow. Ive been learning alot from your videos aswell and i just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to make them!

The "band" across the eyes has the look of a lamination to it?

Possibly.
The discoloration is throwing me off a little here. Almost looks like it could be a lam or PMD from these images.
If PMD, possibly acid, applied in a linear direction? (I don't see damage on the reverse from blunt force damage)
