1861 IHC : Grade me... please
I know it is tough to grade by photo, but what do you think on this one.
(Trying to learn some lessons here on grading MS coins.)
I see tiny slide scratches on cheek and something going on towards the upper field and left/right of date on the obverse.

Nice images again Mark.
I think the areas each side of the date are mostly discoloration and I see the areas on the cheek.
This should easily be MS 64 maybe higher.
Your images seem to show some yellow spots (Mint rinse?) around AMER and the headdress and I'm not sure how they affect the grade.

Ah, but you are good at identifying state.
I noticed the obverse rim is "folded" on itself in top left quadrant as well.
So, what else is keeping this so far from 70?

Looks like a 64/65. I think it is clean enough for a five in the fields, strike is good, color hard to judge from pix. Is that a fold over or an illusion caused by the holder?

So, I changed the angle of lighting and look what pops up on the reverse. (Cliff nailed the yellow spotting.)
You can also see the "woodie" is more prominent at this angle.

I don't see much in the way of die flow lines. Some around the point of the bust and UNIT on the obv. A few to the upper right of the shield. Most of the devices look pretty sharp.
Maybe an EMDS.

I would grade the coin MS63 but with a shot at one point higher. It is a nice coin.

Daniel,
Your skills at photograde astound me even after these few years!
Yep, MS-63.
Wish I could look at a MS coin and have that gut feel.

Thanks. I think being an art major in painting and studying light and color, plus years of looking at coins gave me an edge, but I get em' wrong often enough. I almost changed my grade while looking at the second image, but stuck with my first impression.

Well, that last photo was emphasizing the flaws. You can't really see the spots or "woodie" under normal lights. At least, not with my eyes.
