Re: Error??
The little triangles you see are not produced by the mint in any way.
This was done to the coin by a punch of some kind after it left the mint, so it is considered PSD. (Post Strike Damage)

Re: Error??
Thank you. That was a very easy explanation that anyone could understand so thank you very much

Re: Error??
Found this thread again and wanted to include this page I came across- Error-ref.com LINK in case it has any relevance to the nickle in question.
The triangles on the OP coin seem to be a different shape triangle.
What do you guys (and ladies) think?
(Scroll down to the nickel minted on the cancelled Rupee)

Re: Error??
Question To the OP ?
Could PM them to let them know this is being revisited?
And you're right Mark, it could easily be damage but the same year and the overall shape is what triggered my recall.
(Not to say someone didn't try to mimic what they saw at Error-ref.com)

Re: Error??
This is what I see (but then again I miss a lot.) lol:
The marks on the OP's coin are opposite each other on the Rev. & Obv. with no apparent bumps showing opposite the diamond patterns.
On the Error-ref coin, the diamond pattern appears only in the center 1/3 to center 1/2 of the coin. The "cancellation" diamonds are probably produced by a continuous "rolling punch" +- 1/2" (12mm) to 3/4" wide with the diamonds off set from each other.
Here is another- 1964p Lincoln cent LINK with cancellation marks also (full width of the coin though).
The NGC article mentions a 1964d Jefferson nickel produced on a 1/4 Rupee coin as well.
So there is precedence for coins being struck on 1/4 Rupee's at both Philly and Denver.
Hmmmmm....
For a start the OP could weigh it have the coin tested to see what it is made of, nickel or silver?

Re: Error??
..... O.K., here is my take:
:eureka:
if we look at the 'posters' coin, we clearly see the "triangular markings" are INTO the coin, as evident by the disturbed/indented reverse rim,
......so possibly a 'part cancelled coin' ??
again, i need to see it first hand ..... hugeeyes

Raised (in relief?) cancellation marks on the Error-ref coin?PALH1 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 28, 2018 10:21 am ..... O.K., here is my take:

hugeeyes ...now if we view the error.ref image,.....
we see what appears to be "RAISED" triangular cancellation markings appearing predominantly on the "raised central devices" (specifically on the obverse in this example) .....
....so, using just these pics for now, i have to go with PMD here ... JMO
Light source is at K-6 producing shadows on the south side of raised areas/devices. Don't the triangles on the building have shadows on the south side indicating the triangles are sunken (incuse), not raised.
I must be misunderstanding something.

Re: Error??
Understandable. Wish I had the capacity to multitask.
Interesting that the cancellation diamonds are a slightly different geometric design from each other.
Is this one you found?

Re: Error??
Interesting because I have always wondered why the mint would need to cancel a coin. Must not have met their standards.

Re: Error??
They cancel coins or now waffle coins that don't meet specifications to be melted and alloy reused.

Re: Error??
Thanks Daniel. That definitely makes sense. With the billions of coins made each year, there must be a certain % that fail their quality control.
