State quarter- unclad coin?
Any one know anything about any business strike state quarters (2003 maybe) being found with no cladding on either side. :sos: I was talking with a friend today who mentioned he found a state quarter in the middle of a new roll of quarters back in 2003 that looked "dark brownish" instead of normal "silver" color.
He said it also has weak details, thinner than other quarters and no reeds around the rim. whistling2:
He wrapped it up and has it stored away. We will try to connect next weekend and I will see if he will let me post pics if anyone here is interested? It would be great if someone here can help him.
I'm not really finding anything online about it. Thanks.

It could be missing clad layers, but no reading would imply it wasn't struck in collar. If so then it should also be larger diameter and not being struck in collar is a Broadstrike. I would have to see the coin to see what could have happened.

Re: State quarter- unclad coin?
Additionally, if you can, please provide the weight of the coin. This is the strongest indicator of an unclad coin vice an artifically colored/toned coin.
Unclad coins are usually only unclad on one side. Extremely rare for both sides. They are produced by the planchet being cut from the start or end of a metal "sandwhich" roll where the clad layers have tapered off. This should normally be trimmed from the metal roll prior to cutting the planchets.
As you stated, it should produce a weak strike due to a thinner (and lighter) planchet.

Re: State quarter- unclad coin?
I will update as I am able to inspect the coin with weigh (I hope ) and pics. I did find a little information online today that might indicate there was some problem with the annealing process that may have occurred also. Thanks so much for the help, questions and suggestions.
Re: State quarter- unclad coin?
I know this is an old post, however, I found while searching for an odd coin I received. The coin is a state of Wyoming quarter from 2007 and it has a grey appearance. It lacks the shiny "silver" color and is very flat looking. I have pictures but nowhere to host them. Thoughts?

Re: State quarter- unclad coin?
There appears to be a fair amount of details on your coin (the darker one?) and it looks like it has the reeding on the edge.
Can you post an image of the reverse and weigh it in grams? That will help narrow down the possibilities.
Thanks.
(ps. sorry I never got back with info on the original post but I don't think the owner and I ever connected and I haven't seen him in about three years.)

Could you post images of both sides of the coin? Usually when a non-toned and uncirculated coin has a different surface appearance it can sometimes be improper annealing.
Re: State quarter- unclad coin?
I do have some of them. Some have one side uncladed other are partially on both sides

Re: State quarter- unclad coin?
These coins are toned and not missing their clad layer at all; a clad coin has a copper core sandwiched between cupro-nickel layers on each side. So you must examine the edges and even weigh a coin, plus the copper will be revealed. Even then there's no guarantee since I have two dimes that have the clad layer artificially removed.
