2014 4-Coin 50th Anniv Kennedy Proof Half Dollar Set

#1 Unread post by tab1962 »

Do most of you think the 50th Anniversary Kennedy 4 coin set was a failure? I don't think the mint ever reached the 225,000 limit. I remember the 2001 Buffalo Silver dollar selling out in like 2 weeks! I never had a chance to order a set!

I think their cost is the failure, and the mint tries to mint as many as they think people will buy so the demand is satisfied. Sets like these tend to go down in value, 9 times out of 10.

do you know what the 'original release cost' was for these sets ??

imo....i think these sets "sales" depend upon marketing hype. the amount of press, ad space, & hype they throw at them before they get 'released', make a big difference. of course the "die-hard" KHD collectors will buy a set, just to 'have one in the collection',.....but they need to count on a certian %age of sales to the 'non-collectors', who buy them as 'birth year', 'gifts', 'long term investments', 'flippers', & so on.....i don't remember a real 'big push' for these, ad wize. also keep in mind 'the economy'....as values increase, & prices don't really drop in 'tighter economic times', less capitol as a whole, changes hands. i consider these a 'disposable income' purchase. you don't have to have it...it would be cool to own...& i hope it increases in value(?).

APMEX is selling this set at $119 but that doesn't include shipping. The US mint sold them for $99.99 and it looks like you can still buy them.

For 4 silver halves, $100 seems steep, no matter how unique. I think you could get 4 1964 halves for a lot less and if you bought 4 1964 proof sets you would get more coins for your money. Watch, they will be so rare that they will skyrocket in value, so what do I know??

I think you're correct Dan, the demand is already satisfied so they're not going up in value anytime soon.
