First day issue

#1 Unread post by Scubaredneck »

Occasionally I see these notes with postage stamps on them and date stamps for "first day issue." How does this not count as damage against the value of the note? It seems very counter-intuitive to me or is that simply a niche in note collecting?

It's a collecting niche. It's obviously damage but to some it's collectible damage.

:eureka:
my dad, when i was young, would 'mail himself' FDI's of all sorts of things....
& with a 'postmark', it's kinda like a COA, or the 'proof' it was from the first day issued...

I thought he was talking about currency with stamps and a cancellation. Yeah, I used to collect first day of issues stamps and still have some.

The most common we see is the two dollar bill from 1976 with the April first day of issue stamp on it. The big deal here was that they changed the reverse to commemorate the U.S. Bicentennial and issued it in the anniversary of the birth of our country. My bank at the time gave regular customers a chance to win some in a drawing. I won 50 of them. Like I said, they were pretty common. I sold them a little above face at a flea market. Who wants bills with stamps on them??
