1. Post a front and back image of your coin with a specific question about what you’re seeing or asking about and one coin per topic.
2. Please remove coin from the holder unless it’s US or an official mint case or unless it is graded by a grading service.
3. Images should be taken by a camera or cell phone camera, we ask that members don’t use images through a microscope screen.
4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.
5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.
6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. PM’s are for issues, technical and personal, but not for coin questions (refer to number 5 on this list). Is it better buy graded coins or uncertified coins?
I was wondering if it makes sense to just buy modern graded and slabbed proof coins or buy directly from the US Mint and then immediately send them off to a grading service? What are the pros and cons of each decision?

Re: Is it better buy graded coins or uncertified coins?
If I'm buying a key date , special this or that , or a coin that I don't know much about I will searched out a slabbed item to be safe . But if I see a good deal and it's in a cardboard 2 x 2 I'm ok with that too.
Submitting coins to a service can be a huge gamble . Most of the slabbed coins that I own probably cost someone much more to be graded than they will ever be worth . But that is just my view of the world at the moment.

I would buy graded examples at least a year or two after the hype has gone down.

Welcome
Keep in mind that buying a coin directly from the US mint, and then sending it off for grading… Does not necessarily mean that you will automatically receive a 70. There is a huge misconception in this subject. Please research "Die State".

Re: Is it better buy graded coins or uncertified coins?
Grading companies use nothing scientific and no verifiable standards to grade coins. The ink on the label can change if a coin is broken out and re-slabbed.
People who buy the slab and not the coin are aware of this and make sure what they buy is what they wanted. A lot of people have no clue about this and so people spend a lot of money on coins just in blind faith. And a lot have, therefore, been taken for something they thought they bought, but did not.
See the essay in my signature for yourself.

Re: Is it better buy graded coins or uncertified coins?
If buying slabbed coins I'd make darn sure they are coming from a reputable source. There are many high quality fakes...they are only going to get better and more wide spread. It's very difficult if not impossible to put a slabbed coin through all of the test to verify. Remember many fake trade dollars were struck in 90% silver. As the value of numismatic coins increase there may be fakes struck with the correct metal content.
The biggest problem I see with raw coins is buying from a picture and there are a lot of shills hawking coins on the internet.
I'm old-school...I want to hold, touch (yes, I touch my coins), smell, weigh and hear my silver dollars. Haven't tried tasting yet...
There's no replacement for having the coin in hand.
Cheers,
Kenny

Be very cautious when buying a coin online, as bought one that looked outstanding, only to find out when took a picture of it that it looked like it had been cleaned with a scratcher pad.
