1. Post a front and back image of your coin with a specific question about what you’re seeing or asking about and one coin per topic.
2. Please remove coin from the holder unless it’s US or an official mint case or unless it is graded by a grading service.
3. Images should be taken by a camera or cell phone camera, we ask that members don’t use images through a microscope screen.
4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.
5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.
6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. PM’s are for issues, technical and personal, but not for coin questions (refer to number 5 on this list). The 1964 SMS coins do exist, but they are very rare!
The main difference is the finish, the images below are from PCGS
Here is the 1964 RD Business Strike Compared to the 1964 SMS RD

From Collectors Universe:
"The edges for most 1964 SMS coins also tend to be square and sharp. The bust and legends are usually highly detailed and sharp on most examples, especially when compared to circulation strike coins. The surfaces are non-reflective compared to proof coins of the era, yet, are not the same finish as regular issue coins from the same year."

This is a normal proof cent and not an SMS. They didn’t come in those packages and wasn’t released for collectors or anyone for that matter.

Hi Daniel may I start off by saying I'm a huge fan of yours...but I've heard that some may have possibly been slipped in with the proof sets no one's really sure...I know it's a long shot but I have a 1963 proof mint set and I've compared the two and the 1964 I have covers all the criteria that I've heard...satin finish, no reflection, blocked edges, squared rim high detail I mean everything...by all means Daniel I highly respect your expertize and mean 0 disrespect but I can't shake that I may have something here...I know you personally don't inspect coins from random people...my question is do you know someone I can trust to send it too in there hands and properly inspect the coin so I can know for sure

something along the lines of what you mentioned can be done by submitting the coin to a major TPG(PCGS,NGC), in order for them to inspect it and authenticate the coin.E012073 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 29, 2022 3:14 am Hi Daniel may I start off by saying I'm a huge fan of yours...but I've heard that some may have possibly been slipped in with the proof sets no one's really sure...I know it's a long shot but I have a 1963 proof mint set and I've compared the two and the 1964 I have covers all the criteria that I've heard...satin finish, no reflection, blocked edges, squared rim high detail I mean everything...by all means Daniel I highly respect your expertize and mean 0 disrespect but I can't shake that I may have something here...I know you personally don't inspect coins from random people...my question is do you know someone I can trust to send it too in there hands and properly inspect the coin so I can know for sure
However I strongly do not recommend you to do that as there is expendsive fees involved in that process and this coin does not match the appearance of the 64' SMS and is likely not a SMS.

Why not send it to Paul? See his avatar. He inspects coins for your members and I would easily trust his opinions ver any grading service. See the essay in my signature about PCGS not being able or consistent in labeling No FG Kennedy halves. The data there is linked from their website and verifiable.
Common grading company shortcomings & resulting co$tly mi$take$ to collectors (using Kennedy No FG halves):

Sorry but there’s no expert or mint statement saying any slipped through and into proof sets. You heard inaccurate information. You should be reading what is known as fact about these and forgo the unfounded speculations. You will be disappointed if you continue down this path.
