1861 Penny Fake or Error

#1 Unread post by Garbonzo56 »

Hello Everyone,

I was sorting through some old pennies and came across an 1861 penny that doesn't match other old pennies. This penny is silver in color (not magnetic) and thicker than the other pennies that I have from around that time frame, although the diameter seems correct. I can't find anything regarding this penny on the internet which leads me to believe that it is either fake or it was stamped on the wrong blank and is worth millions. LOL
If anyone has any information or ideas on what exactly it is it would be greatly appreciated. I have included face and obverse pictures of the coin as well as a picture of the thickness versus an 1895 penny. I have also included a picture of the 1895 for comparison.

Thanks,

Tony

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the welcome. I am from Canada so I don't see a lot of US coins unless I am traveling. It occurs to me that given the age of the coin it is possible that they were produced thicker than later pieces but I haven't found any specifications on exactly how thick they should be. Hopefully someone will be able to provide some information about this coin. It nearly looks like the front of the headdress has been double stamped.

Thanks Again,

Tony

Hi Daniel,

It looks like I accidentally submitted this to the wrong category. Would you be able to move it to the correct one?

Thanks,

Tony

This is a copper-nickel Indian cent with heavy corrosion so was more than likely in the ground at one time then cleaned later. Doesn't mean you did, but it was in the past. It's normal other than that.

No it was not this is corrosion of the alloy and is just damaged. Look up copper nickel Indian Cents and what they look like before they're damaged like this.
