By friction and exposing the zinc by wearing off the copper plating. Here's my video on damaged coins like this https://youtu.be/xoaoikjvoMM

Thank you! It would make the reverse side look like the image design is smashed? I apologise for not using the proper coin talk to describe the reverse side. 😉

I just was watching your video that you sent me the link.
My mind isn't playing tricks on me nor am I seeing things that aren't realistic..
You never explained to my about the rim of the penny.

Yes I did, someone artificially removed the plating, the gray is the zinc underneath. You're coin is just damaged and I have several examples of this.
