1. Post a front and back image of your coin with a specific question about what you’re seeing or asking about and one coin per topic.
2. Please remove coin from the holder unless it’s US or an official mint case or unless it is graded by a grading service.
3. Images should be taken by a camera or cell phone camera, we ask that members don’t use images through a microscope screen.
4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.
5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.
6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. Is this a struck thru error
Hello all,
Sorry it's been a while. I would like to ask if this weird shaped thing on the obverse of my 1994 P Jefferson Nickel could be a struck thru error? If not, what could it be?
P.S. All pictures are of the same coin, and there has been no alteration.
Thanks
Leonel.

Hey Paul,
Is the question about the weight for the nickel or the quarter?
Thanks
Leonel

It's staining from something being on the coin of that shape. Could have been tissue, paper or something of that nature. Looks like ink from a wet newspaper or something printed.

Re: Is this a struck thru error
Leonel,
Have you tried soaking this nickel in acetone?
Sometimes if there is residue left on coins from tape, there will be an odd shape left on the face of the coin.
Another thing, since you have the coin in hand, can you tell if the area is raised in relief or recessed (incuse) or neither?

Re: Is this a struck thru error
Topics fixed, has two different members post two different coin questions. I can split topics but it's not a perfect fix and takes time when there's three different topics in a thread.
As far as the coin is concerned, this coin has toning or is stained, could have been against wet news print or something.

Thank you all. The area is recessed in comparison to the rest of the surface.

Re: Is this a struck thru error
Well then, you might be correct about struck through (a thin metal remnant that fell off).
Laminations are recessed as well but tend to be uneven and rough under the missing metal.

Optical trick of the eye, acetone will have an effect on this, might not removed it completely but you will see it has something on the coin if you dip in acetone.
