Oregon Quarter - Washington on Acid trip?

#1 Unread post by Oldstyyle »

Hello everyone, just joined the forums and this is my first post. I collect mainly error and variety coins since I was 5 years old. The past 20 years I've owned a business that has a register I can search through for anything that catches my eye. Craziest find over those years was a 43' DDO FS-103 in AU50 condition. I also collect US and foreign silver bullion (pandas, maple leafs, libetards, Australian, Queen's Beasts) as well as investing in one or two higher end coins per year.

This quarter has really stumped me. It has quite a bit going on here both obverse and reverse. I'd say definite die clash among other errors. Anyone have any thoughts on this one? I'll post a couple more photos in this thread.

Thank you!

Welcome to the forum and glad to help with your coin!

The quarter in question suffers from toning and having a substance "spilled" on it and has caused some corrosion (green areas). It could have been pop and water from a cup holder and was against and maybe even stuck to other coins in the same holder. So this would be damage or easily removed issue on the coin. You could try acetone to see if that helps.

Let me post these additional photos. The numerous raised die cracks and some of the design features being shifted makes me wonder if it is PMD. I appreciate your advice.

These are not die cracks, they're edges of the toning and maybe some remaining substance on the coin.

Welcome. Palh1 and Daniel know their stuff.
It definitely has some foreign substance and a lot of staining on it.
I would soak in acetone and then maybe distilled water to see what comes off.

Some of the areas that you are seeing as raised may still be there or not. (ie: U of UNITED and the bridge of Washington's nose.) But at least some of the camouflage may be gone.
