1. Post a front and back image of your coin with a specific question about what you’re seeing or asking about and one coin per topic.
2. Please remove coin from the holder unless it’s US or an official mint case or unless it is graded by a grading service.
3. Images should be taken by a camera or cell phone camera, we ask that members don’t use images through a microscope screen.
4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.
5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.
6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. PM’s are for issues, technical and personal, but not for coin questions (refer to number 5 on this list). :agree: Thank you for the response,,PMD,Thought so also for years, but in the back of my mind, two questions lingered. On the reverse side the punch side if you will why are the letters almost perfect with no sign of the punch. Second , why is the obverse outie higher than the corresponding depth of the reverse punch indentation. A true punch would be the other way around especially with the wear factor. If the obverse die had an air bubble under the surface, that gave way at just the right time. this would explain both conditions. I would think the dies that were made 7 years after the civil war were probably not state of the art. Don't get me wrong I appreciate all input. Will get you more pictures and measurement this weekend. I had to go thru a ritual to dig the coin out for these pics, More to follow I promise.

Re: 1871 indian anomaly
A die surface can't get air bubbles that burst, a die can break and a chip fall out and then strike a coin, but it would not look like this. I huge chip like this would show evidence of die cracks and be less round. I don't see any evidence that this was a late die stage or state.
The reverse also shows signs of damage as well and that can't be ignored, looks indented a bit on the reverse as well. It is post mint damage but one of those odd ones that doesn't have an easy explanation on the how, but this couldn't happen at the mint. Not like this.
