Copper-Plated Nickel or Something Like It - 2002-D

#1 Unread post by Leonel »

Hello all,

I found this nickel in my pocket change. At first thought it was rust, or severe damage, but on taking a closer look, it appears to be plated with copper (I think). It is struck on a regular nickel planchet, weighs 5g, and a 2002- Denver mint, but I don't know what it is. Is this an error coin, or some special commemorative variety. From my research I haven't found any 2002 commemorative nickels. Any info at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Leonel.

Hi Paul,

No it is not powdery. It is a solid uniform layer (Even on the rim). I tried finding similar coins online, and no one had a convincing opinion.

Thanks

Leo

Unfortunately, this looks like a cup holder coin.

Yeah, it is a damaged coin from the environment it was stored in.

Typically nickels that turn red have been in the ground.
