1983 Penny mint mark error?

#1 Unread post by EdH »

Hello I have a 1983 penny that is missing the mint mark. There is just a hole about the same size as the mint mark would be. The hole is relatively deep as well. There are no signs of damage in the surrounding area no damage from being ran over or other ways coins are damaged on the "Mean Streets" Lol. Is this considered an error? I have tried to include a photo but a clear close up is proving to be very difficult.

In 1983 the Philadelphia mint produced Lincoln cents with no mint mark on them. I believe 2017 is the only year the P mint mark has been placed on a Lincoln cent.
It is hard to see from your image but it appears to be "zinc rot". That is where the zinc core under the copper plating has oxidized and caused the cent to erupt like a volcano through the copper plating. And this eruption happened to be where the mint mark would be for Denver if it did have a D mint mark at one time.

It does not have any surrounding damage. That spot seems to be isolated to the mint mark. I an new to this can you suggest anything that I can do to hopefully clear this up. It was suggested by a friend to send it into be graded I don't want to do that if its a common flaw. Or was caused after it left the mint.it does have a D mint mark it is just barely legible and definitely can't be seenin the picture.

It is a damaged coin from zinc rot.

These start as a plating bubble that is breached then the exposed zinc turns to zinc oxide and the coin begins to corrode.
