Proof Bicentenial Quarter

#1 Unread post by danielson »

What do you guys think about this Bicentennial Quarter? Notice the Mint mark and a little doubling I think on the Obverse.
All the coins on this set have the same mint mark error and some of the doubling. I do Not have the Eisenhower dollar. If any of you are experts , please advise me if I should send these coins for grading. I really, really appreciate you help. Thank You.

Hard to tell what is going on but looks like some possible die fatigue or machine doubling, but I need images of the entire coin and at different angles. The mint mark is normal and if you can see doubling on the mint mark then it's not a doubled die. A doubled die occurs during the "pressing" and creation of the die and the mint mark was applied afterward. So the mint mark would not be doubled.

Just to clarify, doubled die and doubling are two different things. Doubling is machine doubling or caused by something out of the ordinary during the strike or wear of the die itself. Doubling adds little if any value to a coin.

i believe i hugeeyes what you are picking up in your images,.....
as "D" said, it can be 'hard to tell' what's going on in most of the pictures we hugeeyes .

:eureka:
using scopes has a 'learning curve',.....i've been watching it for a few years now.
there are so many "false readings" you can get from your equipment, that it really does take some "time behind the scope", to 'learn what you are seeing'.

EVERYONE goes through it. that's just a fact. how quickly people pick it up, well, ummmm, that's the "curve" part.
practice, practice, practice,.....& so on......is my gotcoins:

:eureka:
so using your pics here,......the date numbers do hugeeyes like they show 'doubling', but is this a product of "scope reflect"? ... :dunno
the mm seems 'normal for die fatigue' here, again, i would need to hugeeyes it first hand,..... :dunno

:eureka:
keep in mind "how proofs are struck".....
they are "hit" several times,.....the 'more cameo' you get, the more 'hits' the coin receives......& any itty bitty movement of the planchet within the die will produce a 'false doubling'.....
HOPE THIS HELPS

I really appreciate your input. You are the knowledgeable ones in this business. I just found it a little out of the ordinary comparing it to other proof coins of the same year. Especially the mint mark. It seems to be surrounded by metal while in the other mint proof coins it is just a normal S. But you guys are the ones who know and I appreciate your opinions. Thank you. ....oh, BTW I didn't know how to edit the photos that's why they came out wrong. Sorry!! HaHa!
