A coin in circulation comes into contact with as many chemicals/substances as a person does. This black substance could be one of any number of things impossible to identify without an expensive laboratory analysis. Or...the surface could be the result of chemical reactions in soil in which the coin was buried. Or...the coin may have once been in a fire where residue from surrounding burning substances were deposited on the coins surface. Or... you get the idea! widegrin

Very likely - and different soil compositions can make for differing colors/affects to the coins.
