Poor man 1955 Double die ?

#1 Unread post by tatonka »

hello there my nickname is POPO call me POPO please ! LOL widegrin
,I am new to the forum and i am looking for advice on these so called poor mans DDO's on Ebay...There are at least 409 listings in EBAY that sell these 1955 POOR mans DDO's. What is the difference between these Poor man DDO's and the real obvious 1955 DD0's that have doubling on the entire obverse ? Are these worth anything ? what is the deal I mean the 5's on these poor mans look to have some sort of doubling on them , but what is the point, and what are they worth ?

The so-called "Poor Man's Doubled Die", and I put that nickname in quotes for a reason, is not a doubled die and has nothing to do with a doubled die and is in no way related to a doubled die.

A Poor Man's is abraded doubling, not doubled, and it's when the 5 was abraded from die wear or a mint employee abrading the edge of the 5. You can find the same thing on other dates as well, but some sellers use the fact that they have one dated 1955 that they can make it appear it's a minor version of the true 1955 DDO, but it's not.

The Poor Man's isn't worth anything extra but this has been such a successful ruse that collectors pay a small premium for these coins.

:welcome:

Excellent question on a very important topic. Here's an excellent resource on Doubled-Die errors that explains things like the "Poor man's double" and other forms of doubling.

The best thing you can do is educate yourself so that you know what to look for and can then see these guys coming.

Happy hunting!!
