1. Post a front and back image of your coin with a specific question about what you’re seeing or asking about and one coin per topic.
2. Please remove coin from the holder unless it’s US or an official mint case or unless it is graded by a grading service.
3. Images should be taken by a camera or cell phone camera, we ask that members don’t use images through a microscope screen.
4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.
5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.
6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. Coin collecting
Hi i have two American Silver Trade Dollars dated 1883 from what have read on the internet there is quite a few fakes can anyone tell me please what i have to look for on y coins but i did inherit them and the family member was an Antique collector
Re: Coin collecting
Maybe these links will help. The photos you posted will need to be a lot better to make any determination, too fuzzy. Also please post the reverse.

Re: Coin collecting
I can't tell about them being fake or not but, just in my opinion, it looks as though they have been polished (cleaned) to me.
Hope they are not fake and hopefully not cleaned if they are real.

Re: Coin collecting
Just to clarify further. All 1883 Trade Dollars were proof only and none of them have a mint mark. Your coins do notl ook like proofs and with the mint marks are fakes. You should take them to a local coin dealer and let them look at them.
Re: Coin collecting
Hi I have checked my Trade Dollars again with a jewelers eye glass it has a small s i have also used a magnet and it doesnt react with the coins can anyone tell me what the s stamp stands for please is it the city or silver mark . i also inherited another silver dollar dated 1921 i believe is called a Morgan this was also inside a collectors coin plastic envelope sleeve thanks for any reply .
Re: Coin collecting
From what I read in Daniel's post above the S would stand for fake. You may wish to start a new thread in the general coin forum with the morgan rather than to continue this in the introduction forum..

Re: Coin collecting
Yes, please start a new thread for the 1921 with images.
The S is a mark used for San Francisco Mint but they didn't produce Trade Dollars in 1883. The 1883 Trade Dollars must be proof and without a mint mark. The 1883 Trade Dollars are very rare and should be authenticated by a reputable grading service like PCGS, NGC or ANACS. You can type any of thosei n a googl search and read about the services and how to submit coins.
However, to save you money, the coins are fake and not worth anything.
