1. Post a front and back image of your coin with a specific question about what you’re seeing or asking about and one coin per topic.

2. Please remove coin from the holder unless it’s US or an official mint case or unless it is graded by a grading service.

3. Images should be taken by a camera or cell phone camera, we ask that members don’t use images through a microscope screen.

4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.

5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.

6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Steven. I'm new to the forum and I call myself a newbie to coin collecting but I've been doing it for 20 to 30 years. Let me explain. My dad and his dad collected coins when they were alive and I wish they were around now so that I can ask them questions. Back in my school days, my dad helped me start a penny book and a nickel book. I've got a penny book and a nickel book that are 1 per year. They aren't full, probably close to 75%. I also have a set of 3 penny books that is 1 from each mint. The later 2 are almost full and the first one starting around 1904 is about half full. My dad gave me and my twin brother a set of slabbed coins from our birthyear. Mine consists of an Eisenhower dollar, Kennedy half, quarter, dime, nickel and penny. I don't recall when he slabbed it but I'm pretty sure it wasn't sealed at the mint. I think my brother's is sealed from a mint.

I've recently got interested in it again after my father-in-law gave me a metal detector and I've been watching videos on that subject where people find all these coins. Where do "found in the dirt" coins stand in the coin collecting community? All I've found so far is a dog tag in my back yard. My wife's grandmother recently passed away and her mother-in-law gave her a 1921S Morgan dollar in really good shape. I've downloaded a photograding app on my phone I think it is an AU-58. I've bought the CoinManage software and I'm putting my collection into it. It says that coin is $40. How accurate is the software's price?

Welcome S, to the internet's #1 coin collecting destination. First some references:

1. Free coin collecting software, and weekly updates on coin prices
https://www.mintstate.com/Website/Home.aspx

2. A trustworthy coin dealer, too bad they are an Ohio State fan
https://portsmouthcoinshop.com/

3. For all your error needs
https://conecaonline.org/

Also you do not need a big expensive photo setup to share images, I hear Paul is going to buy a Desktop Scanning Electron Microscope, but you know how it is with the upper .2% of the 1%. All you really need is a good cell phone camera, something to rest it on and a selfie ring. If you like, you can also add a microscope app, I have an image below so you can see how well something free works these days.

So anyway we are here to help if possible.
